The way you begin your day oftentimes dictates how the rest of it will go. Ever stub your toe first thing in the morning while you’re running late? Spill your coffee? Get a speeding ticket on the way to work? Chances are, if you’ve had a day that began with something less-than-pleasant, it might have had a snowball effect of more negative experiences to follow. You’ve probably also noticed, the complete opposite is true as well! Ever find a $5 bill on the ground or have a morning romp that makes you feel lucky for the rest of the day? The point is, the manner in which you begin has a tremendous effect on the outcome.

Breakfast has long been dubbed “the most important meal of the day”. Not only does it kickstart your metabolism into gear, eating a healthy and hearty breakfast helps to prevent unhealthy snacking throughout the day. Having some source of proteins and nutrients provide an instant energy boost after a night of fasting. Your body anticipates the signal to convert these building blocks into energy so you can kick ass and take names, just like nature intended.

Superfoods have long-since been used to nurture the body and eliminate what ails you. Aside from amping up your immune system, many superfoods provide plant-based proteins and long-lasting, clean energy, giving your body the right tools to take on the day. Superfood Breakfast Recipes:

Matcha Pancakes
by Neda Varbanova (@healthywithnedi)

“Matcha pancakes have become a big hit lately. Matcha has many wonderful health benefits – it is packed with antioxidants, vitamin C, detoxifies the body, enhances mood and lowers cholesterol. These gluten-free fluffy pancakes will have you coming back for more!” – Neda

(Makes 10 pancakes)

1/4 cup coconut flour
3 tsp coconut oil, plus more for frying
3 large eggs
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp sea salt
1 tbsp maple syrup, plus more for serving
1/3 cup cottage cheese
1/4 cup almond milk
1 tbsp matcha powder
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Optional Toppings:
maple syrup
coconut flakes

STEP 1. Combine all of the ingredients to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
STEP 2. Heat coconut oil in a large skillet over low to medium heat.
STEP 3. With a ladle, pour out just enough of the batter to make a small round pancake. The skillet I used allows to fit 3 pancakes at the same time. Cook for 2 minutes, until you see small bubbles appear and the bottom is golden. Flip and cook for about 30 seconds.
STEP 4. Continue cooking until all the batter has been used, adding more coconut oil to skillet as needed.
STEP 5. Serve with maple syrup, raspberries, and coconut flakes.

She supercharged these beautiful bowls by adding maca and spirulina powder, most notably used for increasing energy, protein intake, balancing hormones, and a wide range of vitamins and minerals.

Rainbow Smoothies
By Morgan Witkin (@morganickitchen)

“The bases for each smoothie bowl are the same. I just added specific elements at the end to alter the colors and a bit of the nutritional aspects. Admittedly, in the end, I just mixed the remnants of all three smoothies together and ate them as one!” -Morgan

Blue smoothie bowl:
2 frozen bananas
1 tbsp hemp seeds
1/4 cup coconut milk 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 tsp blue spirulina powder

It doesn’t need to be Fall or Winter to enjoy a delicious, warming cup of chai latte, and you certainly don’t need to be Chuck Norris to feel like you can kick ass, either. With this fully-loaded adaptogenic blend of spices and superfoods, you’ll be kung-fu fighting off fatigue and boosting your metabolism, libido, mood and skin health.

The Chuck Norris Chai Latte
By Yourlixir (@yourlixir)

½ tsp of Yourlixir Turmeric Powder
½ tsp of Yourlixir Maca Powder
¼ ground cloves
¼ tsp of cinnamon
¼ tsp of ground ginger
¼ ground cardamom
Dash of cayenne pepper
1 cup coconut milk
Pinch of pepper
*Optional: a drizzle of pure maple syrup for added sweetness

Warm the coconut milk on the stovetop on low heat.

While the coconut milk warms up, mix the dry spices together in a mug to make your own chai spice blend.

Once the milk is warm, pour into the mug of spices and stir well. (make sure not to boil the milk, as it can create a separation that’s not as pleasant).

Drizzle some maple syrup on top if you’d like to add a touch of sweetness.

*If you prefer, you can blend the warm milk and spices in a Magic Bullet or blender for a few seconds to really get a smooth mix.

*Can be made “Dirty” with a shot of espresso!
